Abstract

The current study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pomegranate and orange juices fortified with Probiotic Lb.plantarum, Lb. rhamnosus and Lb. acidophilus in weight gain and the balance of the natural intestinal flora in experimental animals by induced diarrhea infection with E. coli. 24 male rats (Albino Sprague – Dawley) were used and were divided into eight groups with three replicates, and the duration of the e experiment was 28 days.

The results of the statistical analysis showed, with probability (P<0.05), that infection with diarrhea by E.coli caused a significant increase in the weights of the rats. The highest final weight gain in the infected male rats was (101.5) grams, and that treatment with oral administration of fermented juices led to a decrease in the weights animals: As for the treatment with fermented orange juice, the infected treatment and the treatment with orange juice fortified with Lb.plantarum outperformed the group of rats with diarrhea and the treatment with pomegranate juice. The amount of weight gain was 65 grams, and the initial and final weight were (173 and 238) grams, respectively. As for pomegranate juice, the group of rats with infection and treated with pomegranate juice outperformed. The fermented with the probiotic L .acidophilus, the amount of weight gain was 54 grams, and the initial and final weight were (184 and 238.5) grams, respectively.

As for the balance of normal flora of the intestine, the results of the statistical analysis was showed, with (P<0.05), the effect of diarrhea caused with E.coli on the microbial balance of the intestines, as it caused a significant increase in the total count of coliform, Salmonella and Shigella, and a significant decrease in the total count of Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) compared to control groups and groups of infected and treated groups,
